Screening

1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lifetime. Most cases occur in men over the age of 65, but prostate cancer can occur in men younger than 40. Screening is important as the earlier the disease is caught, the more effective options will be available for treatment. Screening can include PSA blood tests, imaging such with MRI or PET/CT, and physical examinations.

Diagnosis

If there is evidence of prostate cancer via screening then a follow up procedure called a prostate biopsy may be ordered. This involves the collection of small samples of prostate tissue that are sent for analysis to a lab to determine if cancer cells are present. Additionally, diagnostic imaging such as with an Ultrasound, MRI or PET/CT may be ordered.

Staging

If prostate cancer is found then your physician will go through the process of staging the cancer, or defining the risk from low to high. The staging will help determine what procedures or interventions are necessary to effectively treat the cancer.

Treatment

Treatment options offered through the Center of Excellence include robotic assisted surgery, proton therapy, brachytherapy, traditional radiation therapy, ablation treatments such as high intensity frequency ultrasound (HIFU) and various systemic treatments including chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
