Lung Cancer Treatment

Fight lung cancer with innovative proton therapy treatment.

About Lung Cancer Treatment

Lung cancer remains the number one cancer killer among men and women in North America. Proton therapy is a precise form of radiation that allows doctors to selectively target lung tumors, minimizing harmful exposure to the healthy tissue and organs that surround them. Precise radiation treatment is important for lung cancer patients because the lungs are located near several of the most sensitive and critical organs and tissues in the body, including the heart, esophagus and spinal cord. Proton therapy can be especially beneficial for patients with compromised lung function, stage I, II or III lung cancer, inoperable non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, recurrence after surgery, cardiovascular disease or patients who prefer less invasive treatment.

Proton Therapy Has Proven Clinical Results

Research shows that proton therapy is as effective as X-ray radiation in treating non-small cell lung cancer and may reduce side effects such as inflammation of the lungs (pneumonitis) and esophagus (esophagitis). Due to the precise nature of proton therapy treatment, your healthy heart, esophagus, spinal cord and lung tissues receive limited exposure to harmful radiation. Proton therapy has also been shown to have higher remission rates and a lower risk of secondary cancer than traditional radiation treatment.

The Treatment Process

Your doctor will work with you on a treatment regimen that makes the most sense for your diagnosis. Treatments, also known as protocols, for lung cancer can range anywhere from 5 to 33 protocols with each session averaging about 20-30 minutes. Treatments occur at the center every day, Monday through Friday.

Despite initially being told that I only had 18 months to live, here I am – more than 5 years later! Proton therapy allowed me to not only beat my survival expectancy but also to thrive.
