Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer
Fight gastrointestinal cancer with innovative proton therapy treatment.
ABOUT GASTROINTESTINAL (GI) CANCER TREATMENT
If you have gastrointestinal cancer, you are not alone. An estimated 27,510 individuals are battling gastrointestinal cancer in the U.S. Luckily, there are many radiation therapy options you can choose to fight GI cancer, including proton therapy. Common GI cancers treated with proton therapy include esophageal, liver, bladder and rectal.
PROTON THERAPY HAS PROVEN CLINICAL RESULTS
Proton therapy offers many benefits when it comes to treating gastrointestinal cancer. The precise nature of proton radiation allows our team to only target tissues affected by cancer and spares the healthy surrounding tissues that play a role in proper digestion and metabolization. This helps reduce side effects like vomiting, cramping, nausea, diarrhea, the inability to absorb nutrients (malabsorption), dehydration and sexual dysfunction. Additionally, the painless and noninvasive nature of proton therapy will allow you to continue on with your regular lifestyle throughout treatment.
THE TREATMENT PROCESS
Your doctor will work with you on a treatment regimen that makes the most sense for your diagnosis. Treatments, also known as protocols, for gastrointestinal cancer, can range anywhere from 5 to 33 protocols with each session averaging about 20-30 minutes. Treatments occur at the center every day, Monday through Friday.
Two-thirds of GI cancer patients are over the age of 65. Get all of the information on symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.Learn more
