Oklahoma Proton Center

Making informed decisions about your cancer care is essential.

Virtual consultations are available at Oklahoma Proton Center to provide convenient access to the answers patients and their families need to make informed decision about their care.

Through an easy to use, HIPAA compliant video chat platform, patients can connect with the experts specializing in proton therapy without leaving the comfort of their homes. Our medical directors will review your case, answer any questions you have about treatment options and diagnosis, and talk to you about the potential benefits of proton therapy for your cancer.

Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation treatment that suits many types of cancers and tumor types. If a physician recommends radiation therapy as part of your cancer treatment, proton therapy is likely an option. Unlike other radiation treatments that use X-rays or photons such as IMRT, VMAT, and Cyberknife, protons have a unique physical property that allows radiation oncologists to precisely target a patient’s cancer and stop the protons inside the tumor, avoiding healthy tissue and organs. This decreases the likelihood of undesired and unnecessary side effects.

A cancer diagnosis is scary, we understand that choosing the right option can become overwhelming. Often times travelling to a facility for answers is an additional burden for both patients and their care-givers. Our goal with virtual consultations is to empower patients to feel comfortable and confident with the treatment option they choose for their unique diagnosis by providing information and education based on the specifics of their case.

  • How do I schedule a consultation?

To schedule a consultation with a physician, simply call and speak to a Cancer Care Expert. They will help you determine whether an in-person or telehealth consultation is better for you, and help you through the process. Both types of consultations provide a one-on-one appointment with a board-certified radiation oncologist to talk about your diagnosis, answer questions, review treatment options and discuss your next steps.

  • What is telehealth?

Telehealth and telemedicine are broad terms that involve healthcare providers giving real-time (live) clinical services to patients through a “virtual visit” instead of in-person. A telehealth consultation allows you to remain at home and speak directly to a physician through a video connection about your diagnosis, treatment options and next steps. When you call and speak to a Cancer Care Expert, they will help guide you through our simple telehealth process.

  • Who decides whether I schedule an in-person or telehealth consultation?

Ultimately, the decision is up to you and the physician. Either option provides a one-on-one appointment with one of our board-certified radiation oncologists. Our physicians have developed some general guidelines, which our Cancer Care Experts can use to help you determine if an in-person or telehealth consultation is the best way to quickly and safely move you forward in your cancer care journey. If you have any remaining questions or concerns about the choice, we can present those to our physician for consideration.

  • Who is eligible for a telehealth consultation?

There are no absolute rules determining who is eligible for telehealth consultations. Our physicians have developed guidelines, which our Cancer Care Experts will use to help determine if an in-person or telehealth consultation is the best way to quickly and safely move you forward in your cancer care journey. When you call, please share with our team any concerns or questions you have and we will work with you to find the best solution.

  • What will I need for my telehealth consultation?

Our options for telehealth consultations will work with most smartphones, tablets or computers that have video capability. When you call and speak to one of our Cancer Care Experts, they can explain how our telehealth program works, determine if you have the technology you need, and help you decide which option will work best for you. They will also provide step-by-step instructions to guide you through our simple process.

  • Can someone help me with my telehealth consultation?

Yes. We understand technology can sometimes be intimidating, but a telehealth consultation can be very simple. Our Cancer Care Experts will walk you through the entire process. Telehealth is an excellent tool that allows you to speak with a physician about your cancer care without leaving your home. As a first step, simply call and speak to a Cancer Care Expert. They can answer any of your questions and explain the process in more detail. They can also help you schedule a consultation and move forward in your cancer care journey.

  • What can I expect during my telehealth consultation?

Your telehealth consultation will provide the same personal attention as an in-person visit with a physician. Prior to your appointment, our physicians will review your case and your records. Once the consultation begins, you and the physician will be able to see each other on the screen of your smartphone, tablet or computer in real-time, as if you were in the same room. Our physician will talk with you about your cancer diagnosis, answer your questions and discuss treatment options. If you need assistance, someone will be available to walk you through each step of the process.

  • Does insurance cover telehealth consultations?

Nearly all commercial insurance providers and Medicare cover telehealth consultations the same as they would an in-person consultation. If you have questions related to your specific insurance, you can call and speak to a Cancer Care Expert, who can help determine your coverage.
